About Us

Award winning and fully restored, the Brisbane House is open for overnight guests! Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s notably tall and skinny and carved out of the stone from the nearby bluff. William Henry Brisbane built it in 1868. He was a human rights activist from South Carolina before his time. We’re preserving his legacy by opening it up to guest stays and by showcasing contemporary art created exclusively by internationally-known artists of color. Come to celebrate your friends, family, and your story. Leave inspired by Brisbane’s courage to write your next chapter. The house sleeps six and has one full bathroom. Also, the adjacent ''summer kitchen'' sleeps an additional four and there's another new full bathroom on the ground floor in the connector between the house and the summer kitchen.

Your seasoned host, Samantha Crownover, is the executive director for a chamber music festival in Madison. Her husband, Bruce, is a printmaker and artist and works at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. They're both crazy about travel and love to cook and eat great, local food. A native Wisconsinite, Samantha plays pond hockey and tennis. Bruce is from Southern California and loves the outdoors.
